THE FRIENDSHIP BUSINESSS

I’ve been thinking a lot about friendships lately. How they form, grow and change. We have friends from different areas of our lives. There’s our first friends, usually made through our parent’s social circles. The friends we pick up on our way through school and our time at University. We will make new friends through current friends and we can even meet friends in our workplaces. As we navigate this terrain we may find ourselves asking the question, is this friendship worth it.

So what defines a friendship as worthy? Ultimately, that comes down to your personal preferences. For me, above everything else, a friendship is worth it if the person is a positive influence in my life. I look for people that make me want to be the best version of myself, that keep me grounded and allow me to be my true self at all times.

I’ve been really fortunate that most of the friends I have share the same ideas of what a friendship should be. I have also embraced friendships only to discover a nasty or jealous side in the person. Some have even undercut my achievements for their own gain.

Unfortunately, we can’t necessarily see these people coming. It’s normally a few months into our new friendship where we start to see undesirable traits. If this happens,  it’s important to remember their behaviour comes from a place of insecurity. You may not be able to control the things they do, you can control the type of influence you want in your life.

Now, don’t get me wrong, not all undesirable traits warrant the end of a friendship. There are some issues that can be fixed with an open dialogue. A friend who is constantly late should be handled different to a friend who is always tearing you down or picking apart your appearance.

Friendships should not be one sided. They should be a relationship between two people that both want the best for each other. Celebrating the wins and picking each other up in the losses. The people we surround ourselves with shape us so don’t be afraid to remove people who don’t value you the traits you do.
